Escaping Diet Land

It’s the first thing in the morning and you just woke up. You let the dog out, poured yourself a hot cup of coffee, prepared breakfast, and are more than ready for a few minutes of peace & quiet before the day gets going. Halfway through your morning Facebook scroll you’re still feeling a little hungry. But you shouldn’t feel hungry… should you? You might start to wonder if a little something extra will satisfy you, but then all those old diet thoughts resurface in your mind and suddenly food becomes a lot more complicated.

All you want to do is go about your day without obsessing over food, but it seems almost impossible to escape diet culture. After you decide to break up with dieting and begin listening to your own body, you might find yourself face to face with that diet culture nonsense you’re trying to leave behind.

It can be hard to actually STOP dieting because those old habits are so ingrained in your mind.

Without even realizing it, you might be eating smaller portions, picking the lower-calorie options, or checking calories and grams of sugar. Take the time to check in with yourself before and after a meal to see if any diet-related behaviors or thoughts came up.

Then there’s all that outside noise you’re constantly being bombarded with. We all know social media is filled with ads, but they can be sneaky… you don’t even know you’re being sold a weight loss product until you see that little #ad at the end of the caption. By then, you’re almost completely convinced they have the key to weight loss… but you don’t even WANT to focus on weight loss anymore!

Your family and friends can be another source of outsider influence. When you’re perfectly okay with having another scoop of ice cream and you see someone only allowing themselves one bite, you might start to second guess your own decision.

After immersing yourself in the land of weight loss for years and years, give yourself some time to readjust to life without restrictions.

Retraining your brain takes times, but every time you say yes to your cravings, you’re saying a big fat NO THANK YOU to diet culture.

Don’t be afraid of your desire to eat the food you love.  You can learn to stay in control and still enjoy every single bite.

And that is a true win in my book.
